Humanitarian Action for Children 2022 (Revision 1, November 2022): Haiti
- The humanitarian situation deteriorated sharply from August 2022, with widespread civil unrest and gang violence.
- Cholera resurged in October 2022, the first cases in more than three years.
- People in need rose from 4.4 million to 4.9 million (2.5 million children) following the deterioration.
- UNICEF revised its 2022 appeal upward from USD 97 million to USD 104.3 million.
- UNICEF is prioritizing rapid targeted response around cholera cases and case clusters.
This first revision of UNICEF's 2022 Humanitarian Action for Children appeal for Haiti responds to a humanitarian situation that greatly deteriorated from August 2022, with peaks of widespread civil unrest and gang violence, and the resurgence of cholera in October 2022 after more than three years without a single case in the country. This compounded an already challenging context shaped by persistent political instability, socioeconomic crisis, rising food insecurity and malnutrition, remaining needs in earthquake-affected areas, internal displacement, the expulsion of Haitian migrants from several countries, and cross-border migration.
UNICEF is scaling up support to the Government and humanitarian partners to ensure continuity of WASH, education, health, nutrition, child protection and social protection services, and is promoting rapid targeted response around cholera cases and case clusters to curb transmission. UNICEF revised its 2022 appeal to USD 104.3 million to meet the humanitarian needs of Haitian children and their families, including those affected by or at high risk of cholera, targeting the same 953,796 people (521,932 children) out of 4.9 million people now in need, up from 4.4 million before the deterioration.
