Humanitarian Action for Children 2019-2020: Haiti

This edition of UNICEF's Humanitarian Action for Children appeal covers 2019-2020. Haiti's cholera response progressed well in 2018, reaching the last mile toward elimination with a 70 percent decrease in suspected cases since 2017, though localized outbreaks in Artibonite, Centre and West departments kept the risk of resurgence high. An estimated 982,000 people remained severely food insecure, 39,000 children under 5 were projected to be affected by acute malnutrition in 2019, and over 640,000 people needed access to primary health care.

The Haitian-Dominican migration situation continued to pose a protection challenge, with about 10,000 Haitians expelled monthly, often under precarious conditions and separated from family. As of 31 October 2018, UNICEF had USD 12.1 million available against its USD 30 million appeal (40 percent funded). UNICEF's cholera rapid response and awareness activities reached over 514,000 people, and in the absence of a domestic nutrition budget, UNICEF covered 90 percent of the country's therapeutic nutrition commodity needs, reaching over 14,500 children under 5 with acute malnutrition.

For 2019, UNICEF requests USD 24 million (and an indicative USD 22.5 million for 2020) to continue supporting the National Plan for the Elimination of Cholera (2013-2022), strengthen management of acute malnutrition and infant feeding, provide protection assistance to children affected by abuse and migration, and support the reintegration of migrant children into education.
