- Estimates between 150,000 and 500,000 restavèk children in Haiti, with a further 3,000 in the Dominican Republic.
- Cites survey findings that 16 percent of Haitian children surveyed were restavèk, rising to 40 percent in Cité Soleil.
- Sets the practice against Article 335 of the labor code, which bars employment of minors under fifteen, and the June 2003 act outlawing placement into restavèk service.
- Submitted to the twelfth session of the UPR Working Group, 3 to 14 October 2011.
Full Description
A joint civil society submission to Haiti's 2011 Universal Periodic Review on the restavèk system, endorsed by a coalition including the Bureau des Avocats Internationaux and the Center for Constitutional Rights. UPR submissions are the mechanism through which non-state evidence formally enters a state's human rights review, so they set out the case that national reporting does not make.
