The 66-page program states that it replaces every earlier program, authorized or not, used in the country's schools. A foreword sets out the aims of Haitian education and its principles, including free and compulsory schooling guaranteed by the state, and lists six objectives of the école fondamentale. An organizational chart of the education system and a timetable for the first and second cycles follow: 30 weeks a year, 24 hours a week in year 1 (720 hours), and 4,650 hours over the six years. The detailed programs then give, for each subject, themes, specific objectives, content, suggested activities and assessment. Creole, taught as the child's mother tongue, covers oral communication, reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling and written production. Mathematics covers numbers up to 69, addition without carrying, measurement, telling time and mental arithmetic. Social sciences cover geographic space, orientation, the days of the week, family and school. Experimental sciences cover the human body, local plants and living things.
