The Foundations of the Practice of Child Domestic Service in Haiti
Summary: A study for Haiti's Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, December 2002, on the foundations of child domestic service.
Key Findings
- Counts 173,000 child domestic workers, 8.2 percent of children aged five to seventeen, on stated criteria.
- Sets its figure against earlier estimates, including Clesca's 120,000 (11 percent of children aged six to fifteen) and a 240,000 figure repeated in the literature.
- A ministry publication, so it is the Haitian state's own measurement rather than an external estimate.
Full Description
A study for Haiti's Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, December 2002, on the foundations of child domestic service. It sets out the criteria by which a child is counted as a domestic worker and produces the count that follows from them, and it reviews the earlier estimates against which its own figure should be read. Being a ministry publication rather than an agency one, it is the Haitian state's own measurement of restavèk.
