Disaggregated Estimates of the Haitian Population in 2024
- Haiti's estimated mid-2024 population is 11,867,032: 5,993,144 women (50.5%) and 5,873,888 men (49.5%).
- 7,920,521 people (66.7%) live in urban areas and 3,946,511 in rural areas; Ouest is 96.2% urban.
- Ouest holds 4,038,816 people (34.03%), followed by Artibonite with 1,896,380 (15.98%); Nippes is smallest at 403,045 (3.4%).
- National density is 438 inhabitants per km², compared with 811 in Ouest, 554 in Nord and 244 in Centre.
- People under 18 make up 37.4% of the population; the working-age group of 15 to 64 makes up about 64%.
Prepared by IHSI's Directorate of Demographic and Social Statistics (DSDS) and dated July 2024, this 509-page report disaggregates a national total taken from CELADE's long-term projections for Haiti, revised in 2022. The fifth population census could not be held because of insecurity, and the last detailed estimates date from 2015. The national figure of 11,867,032 is lower than the 12,394,537 projected for 2024 in the 2007 IHSI-CELADE work, after the revision accounted for the earthquake, migration, cyclones, insecurity and COVID-19. Departmental shares were adjusted using IOM data on internally displaced persons. Estimates cover the 140 communes that existed before 2015; the nine communes created since then are not included because their boundaries are not precisely defined. The report has four parts: geography and territorial divisions, methodology, a short analysis of results, and 35 annexes of tables.
