Haiti: Executive Brief of the DIEM-Monitoring Assessment, Round 6 (July 2024)
Summary: Sixth round of FAO's Data in Emergencies Monitoring (DIEM) survey in Haiti, based on computer-assisted telephone interviews with 2,700 households across all ten departments between 13 June and 10 July 2024. It finds that escalating gang violence and political unrest, particularly in Ouest and the Artibonite rice basin, disrupted access to workplaces and markets, and reports 42 percent of households experiencing recent severe food insecurity on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale. Agricultural households with livestock and households not reliant on casual farm labor showed comparatively better food security outcomes.
Key Findings
- The sixth DIEM round covered all ten departments through 2,700 household phone interviews from 13 June to 10 July 2024.
- Escalating violence and political unrest in early 2024, especially in Ouest and the HT04 rice basin of Artibonite, disrupted access to workplaces and markets and worsened food insecurity and income instability.
- Agricultural households still showed better food-security outcomes than non-agricultural households, and agricultural households with livestock were less food insecure than those without livestock.
- Casual farm-labour households were the most food insecure among agricultural households and were identified as a priority group for cash or food assistance.
- Droughts and hurricanes affected agricultural households, especially in Grand'Anse, Nippes, Sud, Sud-Est and Nord-Ouest, while 70 percent of crop producers depended on rain for irrigation.
- The brief recommends immediate cash and voucher assistance, especially in Artibonite, Grand'Anse, Nippes, Nord-Ouest HT01 and urban Ouest communes including Port-au-Prince, Tabarre and Cite Soleil.
