Haiti: DIEM - Data in Emergencies Monitoring Brief, Round 4 (August 2023)
Summary: Fourth round of FAO's DIEM household survey in Haiti, based on data collected between 28 May and 4 July 2023. It reports that 91 percent of surveyed households adopted coping strategies to cope with food insecurity, with Grand'Anse and Nord-Ouest again recording the lowest household dietary diversity scores. Seventy-eight percent of crop producers and 73 percent of livestock producers reported production difficulties, mainly linked to insufficient rainfall or irrigation and to livestock disease or death, while climatic shocks and violence were the most frequently reported shocks.
Key Findings
- The fourth DIEM round collected data from 2,237 households in all ten departments between 28 May and 4 July 2023, using a panel from round 3 plus random digital dialing.
- Food insecurity remained severe, with 91 percent of households adopting coping strategies, including 42 percent using emergency coping and 35 percent using crisis coping.
- Grand'Anse and Nord-Ouest recorded the lowest household dietary diversity and highest household hunger scores.
- Crop producers mainly reported production difficulties linked to lack of rainfall or irrigation, and livestock producers mainly reported difficulties linked to disease, death or malnutrition of animals.
- Climate shocks, sickness or death, and violence, insecurity or conflict were the main shocks, with southern departments especially affected by climate shocks after hurricanes, flooding and earthquakes in the first week of June 2023.
- Agricultural households reported broad assistance needs for the next three to six months, led by cash transfers, crop inputs and food, while very few had received food or cash assistance in the previous three months.
