This FAO/WFP special report presents a crop and food security assessment mission to Haiti after the 12 January 2010 earthquake. Dated 21 September 2010, it reviews the socioeconomic context, the earthquake's effects, agricultural production in 2010/11, rainfall, inputs, seeds, fertilizer, tools, labour, credit, plant-health conditions, production estimates, food availability, imports, food assistance, markets, nutrition and departmental conditions. The report estimates 2010 total food production at 503,600 tonnes for cereals and assesses the 2010/11 July-June marketing year, including seed needs, exports or re-exports, commercial imports and the uncovered deficit.
It describes direct and indirect effects of the earthquake, especially the movement of about 600,000 people from affected urban areas to rural zones, pressure on host families and labour markets, and disruptions to ports and trade. It also documents displacement estimates, food-consumption changes, humanitarian assistance, school meals and nutrition programmes. Departmental notes describe crop conditions, labour costs, livestock, fishing, local prices, displaced populations and malnutrition risks. The report is a core source for the agricultural and food-security situation in the first marketing year after the earthquake.
