Porphyry copper tract (USGS)
The ground the US Geological Survey assessed as geologically permissive for porphyry copper deposits, spanning Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Method
One polygon, the Santiago tract, from the assessment GIS release. Area 78,775 km2. The tract is a Cretaceous to Eocene oceanic arc along the northern Caribbean plate boundary. It is a permissive-geology boundary, not a lithological map: it says where deposits of this type could occur, not what rock lies at a given point. The assessment estimates a mean of 12 undiscovered porphyry copper deposits across the whole tract; that figure covers six countries and territories and is not attributable to any one of them.
