The general Consumer Price Index (base 100 = 2017-2018) rose from 610.5 in April 2026 to 617.9 in May, a monthly increase of 1.2% and an annual increase of 20.0%, down from 3.4% monthly and 21.0% annual the previous month. The slowdown reflects weaker price gains across several items in the household basket and a downward adjustment in petroleum product prices, notably gasoline. Food and non-alcoholic beverages decelerated (rice 23.6% in May vs 24.6% in April; meat 27.4% vs 28.5%; cooking oil 20.8% vs 21.6%), as did clothing and footwear, housing and utilities (rent 22.0% vs 24.8%; charcoal 27.5% vs 28.4%; propane gas 26.8% vs 29.8%), transport (gasoline and diesel 30.0% vs 34.4%) and restaurants. Locally produced and imported goods rose 20.6% and 19.0% year-on-year respectively. Regionally, the Metropolitan Area, the Rest of the West and the Transversal Zone posted the largest increases at 23.3%, 23.0% and 22.6%.
