Key Findings
Full Description
Submitted under General Assembly resolution 65/135, this report reviews humanitarian relief, recovery and reconstruction in Haiti from October 2010 to July 2011. The 12 January 2010 earthquake affected almost 3.5 million people, killed an estimated 222,570, injured 300,572 and caused losses of 7.8 billion dollars, more than 120 percent of 2009 GDP. Displacement fell from a peak of 2.3 million to 634,000 people in 1,001 sites by May 2011. The report details shelter, food, nutrition, education, water and sanitation assistance, the response to the cholera outbreak confirmed in October 2010, which had caused 6,156 deaths and 424,450 cases by 5 August 2011, and preparedness for the hurricane season. It reviews progress under the Government's four rebuilding pillars, including debris removal, elections support, police vetting and institution building, and flags critical challenges: only 37.8 percent of the funds pledged at the 2010 New York donors conference had been disbursed, and the political stalemate between the President and Parliament was slowing recovery.
