The departmental livestock herd reached 1,172,131 head, with local goats accounting for 45.4%, ahead of pigs (26.7%) and cattle (21.6%). Maize was the most important cereal cultivated in the department.
Full Description
This report presents the provisional results of Haiti's General Agricultural Census (RGA), based on the 2008/2009 farm survey, for the Ouest department, published by MARNDR in August 2012. It follows the census methodology and covers the main themes surveyed at the departmental level: agricultural holdings and holders, land structures and tenure arrangements, irrigation, land use and crops, livestock, labour, equipment, credit, extension, and constraints to development. Of the 1,053,107 agricultural holdings enumerated nationally, 216,588 were recorded in the Ouest department, 20.6% of the country's total and the largest departmental share. These holdings span a Utilised Agricultural Area (SAU) of 109,528.9 carreaux, an average of 0.51 carreau per holding, and 97.8% are managed directly by their holders. The departmental livestock herd totals 1,172,131 head, dominated by local goats, followed by pigs and cattle. The census was conducted by MARNDR with technical support from the FAO and financing from the European Union.
