This short presentation note from Haiti's Ministry of Agriculture (MARNDR) describes the Community Survey, the first phase of the General Census of Agriculture (RGA). The census is a joint undertaking of the Haitian State and the European Union with technical support from the FAO, aiming to strengthen the agricultural statistics system and improve data for agricultural and rural policy. The Community Survey covers all communal sections of the country and gathers information across 17 themes, including agricultural characteristics, the state of the environment, roads and access, water and electricity, infrastructure and services, processing units and crafts, markets, cultural sites, economic activities, access to inputs and credit, agricultural employment, social cohesion, food security, development prospects and settlement patterns. Information is collected by MARNDR-designated facilitators from a representative panel in each communal section: more than 6,000 panel members and 120 facilitators, together with the ministry's decentralized structures, were mobilized over one month. Results were to be disseminated as documents, thematic maps, a database and a website. The work was carried out with the MICT, IHSI and CNIGS.
