Key Findings
- Nearly 9 out of 10 shelters are either a school or a church.
- Most shelters were constructed of block bearing walls (66%).
- Most evacuation centers (79%) are older than 10 years.
- Only 15.2% of shelters are accessible to people with disabilities.
- Approximately 45% of centers did not have an adequate number of toilets to serve the full capacity of center.
Full Description
The report details an assessment of evacuation centers in Haiti's southern peninsula (Grand'Anse, Nippes, South, and South East departments) conducted between July and November 2020. As part of the NABuRRS project, implemented by WCDO in partnership with EMI and supported by USAID/BHA, the assessment aimed to evaluate the current state of evacuation centers, focusing on structural conditions, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities. The assessment involved visual inspections, data collection using Kobo Toolbox, and collaboration with local authorities. The findings are intended to inform the selection of centers for upgrades and repairs, as well as to guide future interventions in the region.
